All clear so far, but Hurricane Katrina shows how bad September can be

On Aug. 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina — the costliest natural disaster in American history — made landfall in southeastern Louisiana.

Twenty years later, on Aug. 29, 2025, despite GFS model runs 12 days ago suggesting an anniversary hurricane threat, the Gulf Coast and Florida will actually be a bit cooler than normal, with rising rain chances into the long weekend associated with a front.
