BAY CITY, MI – A historic 1881 bank building on Bay City’s Midland Street has been given new life as Lumberman’s Mercantile, a home goods and gift shop that pays homage to the structure’s rich history.

Married couple Justin Vanderpoel and Stephen Stoddard opened the store, 701 E. Midland St. in Bay City, four weeks ago. They purchased the former Lumberman State Bank building shortly after moving to Bay City from Phoenix in April 2024.

“We fell in love with all the architecture just walking down to the river from our house,” said Stoddard, who noted the building’s Victorian tile work, original trim, and stained glass as key features that drew them to the property.
