A big decision is set to be made on whether a new SEND school in Derby can go-ahead. Earlier this year Derby City Council submitted plans to turn part of St James House off Mansfield Road into a new educational establishment for children with learning difficulties.
It is hoped the upper floors of the building will be able to accommodate about 100 SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) pupils in the long term with demand for places currently high around the city.
The building was recently used temporarily by St Mary’s Catholic School in the aftermath of a serious fire a few years ago – so has previously been partly used as a school setting. But the ground floor of the building would be retained as office accommodation.
