President Donald Trump wants his administration to seek the death penalty for all murder cases in Washington.

“Anybody murders something in the capital, capital punishment. Capital, capital punishment,” Trump said Tuesday, according to CNN . “If somebody kills somebody in the capital, Washington, D.C., we’re going to be seeking the death penalty.”

Trump went on to say he wasn’t sure if the country was ready for that.

“We have no choice,” he said, according to The New York Times .

The Supreme Court nullified the death penalty in Washington in 1972. Residents overwhelmingly rejected its use in a referendum in 1992, according to the Times.

There is currently no death penalty option for cases involving Washington’s local murder statute.
