How did Alabama’s Ty Simpson, a five-star quarterback out of high school, wait for so long before playing without transferring?

“Ty just had to be patient and keep improving,” Simpson’s dad, Jason Simpson told me Thursday on “The Opening Kickoff” on WNSP-FM 105.5 .

The UT Martin coach said there were discussions with former Alabama coach Nick Saban and current Tide coach Kalen DeBoer about Ty Simpson’s future.

“Ty always believed in his ability,” Jason Simpson said.

The first conversation was had after the 2023 season, which the UT Martin coach called a “professional courtesy.”

As it turned out, the meeting happened three weeks before Saban retired.
