As the redistricting fight plays out nationwide, some California Republicans are proposing another solution: splitting the state in two.

It’s been attempted 220 times in California’s history.

The so-called “two state solution” would split the state vertically, with the Bay Area and all coastal counties to the west — about three-fourths of California’s population. To the east, most of Northern California, the Sierra Nevada, the Central Valley and Southern California’s Inland Empire.
