FEDERAL WAY, Wash. — The Federal Way light rail station will open Dec. 6, Sound Transit Board Member Peter von Reichbauer announced Thursday morning.

The extension adds nearly 8 miles to the 1 Line , including stations serving the Kent-Des Moines neighborhood and the Star Lake neighborhood.

Von Reichbauer said he thought of the Federal Way station's opening day as "the day hell freezes over."

"We thought that's what's going to have to happen before we finally have light rail in Federal Way," he said.

Yet, the impossible day seems near. And the station will be up and running well in advance of the FIFA World Cup coming in June 2026, which is expected to draw tens of thousands to the Puget Sound area.
