FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - Construction of a downtown Fort Wayne sculpture honoring one of the city’s late creatives was completed Thursday.

Jody Hemphill Smith passed away in October 2023.

However, her legacy as a world-renowned artist continues in the Summit City.

Soon after her passing, plans for a sculpture honoring Jody and her artwork were announced by her husband, Mark Paul Smith.

Once approved by the West Central Neighborhood Association, Fort Wayne Historic Preservation Commission, and Fort Wayne Public Arts Commission, the Hemphill Smith Art Foundation raised $250,000 to complete the project.

Developed by Fort Wayne’s Cary Shafer, the brightly colored, steel structure was designed to reference Hemphill Smith’s painting ‘Amaryllis’.
