In a room filled with people wearing NAACP T-shirts and supporters of the Farmer Street Cemetery, the Newnan City Council approved the first phase of improvements to the historic site.

At their meeting on Tuesday, Newnan City Council members allocated $664,500 of unassigned funding to start the construction. The city currently has about $25.9 million in unassigned funds, said Assistant City Manager Hasco Craver.

The council members re-established the Farmer Street Cemetery Commission in 2020 and since then, the commission members have worked to involve the community in preservation efforts, hired PaleoWest to locate burial sites as well as the borders of the cemetery and POND & Company to design preservation plans.
