SAN ANTONIO — A former Brave and Georgia Tech alum is stepping onto the field of politics in Texas.

Mark Teixeira, a 3-time All-Star across 14 seasons, parts of two of those with the Braves, announced a campaign for Congress on Thursday.

The 45-year-old is running in the Republican primary for Texas' 21st House District, which covers parts of the San Antonio area.

Teixeira played at Georgia Tech for three seasons, from 1999-2001. before embarking on the pro career that would see him hit more than 400 home runs and win a World Series ring in 2009 with the New York Yankees.

The seat in Texas is being vacated by current Rep. Chip Roy, who is running for state attorney general. A release signaled he would run as a pro-Trump conservative pledging to "secure the border, grow the economy, end
