HUNTINGTON, Ind. (WPTA) - A new fire station is coming to Huntington.

On Tuesday, Huntington’s city council gave the final approval to begin construction of a facility at 1005 Flaxmill Road.

The city originally bought the 3-acre property in 2008 with the intent to build a new fire station.

Officials say the need to replace the city’s aging Condit Street station has only increased since then. At nearly 50 years old, it has become outdated and overcrowded.

The Huntington Fire Department will break ground on the site on September 9.

The new two-story, 17,750-square-foot structure has been designed to meet the department’s modern operational needs, with a focus on firefighter safety, rapid response, and advanced training.
