From within the shade of one of the campus’ stalwart oaks, Mobile officials joined Spring Hill College leaders Thursday in planting a $35 million seed at the nearly 200-year-old institution — a seed in good soil, they say, that will bear fruit for Mobile for generations.
The private Catholic college broke ground on a new Health and Science Innovation Center, which will bear the namesake of the institution’s first woman, revealed simultaneously at the ceremony to be that of Annette N. Shelby, Ph.D., the late wife of Alabama's longtime and influential former senator.
