NEW YORK (PIX11) – Legionella bacteria was found at an FDNY Emergency Medical Service station in Harlem, officials announced on Thursday.
The bacterium was found at EMS Station No. 16, located within Harlem Hospital.
An email sent to EMS members encouraged personnel to refrain from drinking water from the building until further notice.
Legionnaires’ disease is a type of pneumonia caused by the Legionella bacteria, which thrive in warm water and spread through building water systems. The city’s outbreak has been linked to cooling towers, which use water and a fan to cool buildings.
To date, over 100 people have been diagnosed with Legionnaires’ disease, and six people have died, according to city health officials.
