GREENSBORO, N.C. — As the nation marks the 62nd anniversary of the largest gathering for civil rights in our country's history, Martin Luther King Jr's "I have a dream speech" on the National Mall, we look back on MLK Jr's ties to North Carolina.

ROCKY MOUNT AND THE "I HAVE A DREAM" SPEECH

"So, to my friends of Rocky Mount, I have a dream tonight. It is a dream rooted deeply in the American dream...."

This speech was made in a high school gym in Rocky Mount in November 1962, nine months before the National Mall speech. About 1800 people heard it. An NC State professor tracked down the recording at a Rocky Mount library. It was in an old cardboard box labeled 'Dr. King speech, don't erase".
