A pair of roommates in Virginia put police through their paces during an eventful few hours in Spotsylvania, officials say.

Paul White, 38, and Tommy Negron, 47, are both facing drug-related and other charges following a strange series of events that played out late in the afternoon on Tuesday.

According to the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office, shortly after 6:45 p.m. on Aug. 26, deputies were called to Wawa on Falcon Drive to conduct a welfare check on a man — later identified as White — who was spotted with a baggie of drugs hanging out of his pocket.

He also advised responding deputies that he required medical attention "due to a narcotics-related issue," prompting them to take him to an area hospital.

It was all a ruse.

Officials say that once they arrived at the facility, White bolted away from the ambulance and medical staff, and "his apparent need for treatment was quickly revealed to be a ruse to avoid jail."

Deputies canvassed the area and quickly found him hiding in nearby bushes, and after "losing his 'game of hide and seek,'" officials say he ran again on foot to escape.

He was quickly apprehended without further incident and additional drugs were found on him.

Coincidentally, investigators said, at the same time White was attempting his great escape, his roommate, Negron, also found himself in trouble with the law.

Officials said that Negron was involved in a crash in the 4500 block of Lafayette Boulevard, and it was determined he was allegedly under the influence.

Deputies seized suspected cocaine and fentanyl during both investigations.

White was charged with:

  • Possession with intent to distribute a Schedule I/II narcotic;
  • Resisting arrest;
  • Possession of controlled paraphernalia.

Negron was arrested for possession of Schedule I/II narcotic and driving under the influence of narcotics.

Both are being held at the Rappahannock Regional Jail.

"The Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office expresses its gratitude to the deputies who work tirelessly to combat the dangerous narcotics threatening our community," a spokesperson for the agency said.

"We remain steadfast in our mission to protect our citizens and hold accountable those who traffic these deadly drugs."
