People are being advised not to swim in a lake located just south of Calgary due to the presence of fecal bacteria.
Alberta Health Services (AHS) issued a water quality advisory on Thursday, stating that there are elevated levels of fecal bacteria in the water at The Lake at Heritage Pointe.
“Elevated levels of fecal bacteria were detected via testing of the lake water at the main beach location,” reads the advisory. “At current levels, gastrointestinal illness may result from ingestion of the water.”
Water-borne organisms, including fecal bacteria, can cause vomiting and diarrhea. Swimming in the lake could also potentially cause skin, ear, and eye infections, according to AHS.
The health agency will continue to monitor the water, and the advisory will remain until further notice.
