IONIA, Mich. (WOOD) — Ionia County says it has recorded its first human case of West Nile virus of the year.

A Thursday release from the Ionia County Health Department did not release any information about the patient.

State data shows Michigan had counted six human cases of West Nile as of Aug. 22, including one case in Kent County that proved fatal. West Nile and other mosquito-borne illnesses had also been found in mosquitoes and birds in 16 counties, including Calhoun, Kalamazoo, Kent and Muskegon.

Most people with West Nile don't have any symptoms, but some cases can include symptoms like fever, headache, body aches and rashes. More rarely, the illness can become serious or even lead to death.
