As Labor Day approaches, AAA is advising travelers to get on the road sooner, rather than later.
“If they're doing short road trips, what we're advising is leave, if you're gonna leave on Thursday or Friday, do it earlier in the day,” AAA spokesperson Aixa Diaz said. “What a lot of people do is they wait until they get off work and then hit the road. You're gonna get some traffic there, because if where you live, schools are back in session, you're going to have school traffic mixed in with some travelers.”
While Labor Day doesn’t see the volume of travelers when compared to other holidays, Diaz said AAA still receives bookings for major cities across the country.
“People are going to Seattle because of Alaska cruises, Orlando for the theme parks and for the cruises that leave out of central Florida and New York City, Chicago, Atlanta, Boston, those classic American cities, as well as Las Vegas and Denver,” Diaz said. ”And those cities, a lot of people will fly in, rent a car, and then explore the area and explore national parks. Miami is also high on the list.”
Diaz said that the good news is gas prices have stayed relatively steady across June, July and August with an average price of gas around $3.15 nationally.
With fall just around the corner, Diaz said some families may be taking a small road trip or not going anywhere at all.
“What a lot of people do over Labor Day weekend is take short road trips, or maybe even staycations,” Diaz said. “Some people are either out of vacation days, out of money after the summer fun, or maybe their kids are back in school, and they don't have that flexibility.”
