Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been dismissed from his role as manager of Besiktas, just under an hour after the club's failure to qualify for the Europa Conference League. The Turkish side confirmed his departure following a disappointing 1-0 home defeat to Lausanne in the second leg of the play-off round, resulting in a 2-1 aggregate loss.

In an official statement, Besiktas announced, "Our contract with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been terminated following a decision made at the board meeting. Following the meeting, our chairman, Serdal Adalı, thanked Solskjaer for his services to date."

Solskjaer, who took charge in January after signing an 18-month contract, leaves the club having won 15 of his 29 matches. His tenure began positively, with the team losing only one of their first nine matches across all competitions. Under his management, Besiktas finished fourth in the league last season, securing a spot in the Europa League.

However, the club faced early elimination in the Europa League's third qualifying round at the hands of Shakhtar Donetsk, which led them to drop into the Conference League. After a 7-3 aggregate victory over Shamrock Rovers, they drew the first leg against Lausanne last week.

The defeat on Thursday was compounded by a red card shown to Felix Uduokhai just seconds into the second half, making the task even more challenging for the home side. This exit marks the first time since the 2022/23 season that Besiktas will not participate in the main stage of a European competition. Last season, they reached the Europa League phase but were eliminated after winning only three of their eight matches.
