SKOWHEGAN, Maine (WABI) - The Skowhegan Fire Department has a new chief, but he’s no stranger to the area.
Chief Ryan Johnston began his new role less than two weeks ago, taking over for former Chief Ronnie Rodriguez who retired.
Johnston began his firefighting career in the early 90s in Clinton. Before recently joining Skowhegan as Deputy Chief, Johnston also worked for the Bangor and Waterville departments.
Johnston also owns Maineiac Fire Training, teaching firefighters around New England. He says Skowhegan, like many other departments, is struggling with staffing and trainings are a way to put a spotlight on the job.
