Liberty women's basketball coach Carey Green announced his retirement Thursday after 26 seasons on the job.

The school moved quickly to name his replacement, promoting longtime assistant coach Alexis Sherard.

In his tenure, Green's teams won 31 conference titles -- 15 in the regular season, 16 in conference tournaments. The Lady Flames played in 15 NCAA Women's Tournaments, reached the Sweet 16 in 2005, and also earned four WNIT bids.

He leaves with a career record of 591-240, the most wins of a Liberty coach in any sport. He was named Big South coach of the year five times.

Sherard spent 18 seasons on Green's staff. He filled in as head coach and was 6-0 in the 2020-21 season when Green faced health issues.
