MANCHESTER, N.H. —

Nearly 200 dams in New Hampshire are under the highest level of state scrutiny, according to safety reports.

The state monitors dams, classifying them by their condition and the risk they would pose if they fail.

The Pittsfield Mill Dam is a century old and has withstood the test of time and water. The state classifies it as a high-risk dam because if it failed, there would be catastrophic downstream impacts and probable loss of life.

It is also rated in poor condition. Engineers say it could not withstand a 1,000-year flood.
