MINNEAPOLIS — DFL leaders from every level of government packed Minneapolis City Hall on Thursday afternoon alongside national gun violence prevention groups, renewing calls for tougher gun restrictions following the deadly shooting at Annunciation Church.

Specifically, the Democratic lawmakers made their case for passing state and federal bans on assault weapons, such as the AR-15 used in this week's shooting in South Minneapolis. The proposal, however, may face a difficult path politically, due to the current makeup of Congress and the Minnesota legislature.

"We need action at the federal level. We need action at the state level. We need coordination with the cities around the country to make sure that every person has this common foundation of safety," Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey
