Federal prosecutors said Thursday that they charged a Canadian immigrant with voting illegally in North Carolina in the 2022 and 2024 elections.

Denis Bouchard, 69, faces four federal charges related to the allegations. U.S. Attorney Ellis Boyle announced the charges Thursday. Prosecutors say the investigation began with an investigation by the North Carolina State Board of Elections.

"Every single time a noncitizen casts an illegal vote in North Carolina, it steals and nullifies the vote of an actual citizen," said Boyle, who this month was sworn in as U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina after being appointed by U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi.
