PITTSBURGH —
When many people picture dams, they think of the massive locks and concrete structures along rivers like the Allegheny. But across western Pennsylvania, smaller dams sit near neighborhoods and parks — some classified as “high hazard,” meaning a failure could lead to loss of life.
In nearby counties, dams range widely in size and condition. A new interactive tool built by the Hearst Television data team lets residents see each dam’s location, condition, and risk rating. Using data from the National Inventory of Dams, the tool also links to inspection dates and ownership information so people can better prepare and stay informed. Advertisement
