Ottawa police are investigating a stabbing incident that occurred Wednesday afternoon at a grocery store in College Square. A Jewish woman in her 70s was attacked while shopping at Loblaws, which is known for having the largest kosher selection in the area.
The woman was stabbed in the torso around 1:35 p.m. as she was shopping with a friend. She was quickly taken to the hospital with serious injuries but has since been treated and released. The suspect, identified as 71-year-old Joseph Rooke from Cornwall, has been charged with aggravated assault and possession of a dangerous weapon. He is currently under investigation and may face additional charges.
Police confirmed that the suspect and the victim did not know each other prior to the incident. The West Criminal Investigations Unit is leading the case, with assistance from the hate crimes and bias unit.
In a statement, the Jewish Federation of Ottawa expressed concern over the incident, stating that the victim is a "cherished member of our community" and is recovering. The federation emphasized that it is closely monitoring the situation and has been in constant communication with law enforcement. They noted, "We have all been deeply shaken by the stabbing incident that took place yesterday afternoon at the Baseline Kosher Loblaws."
The federation also mentioned that there is no indication of increased risk to Jewish facilities or institutions at this time. They are working with various authorities, including the police and community safety officials, to enhance security measures for Jewish community members.
The Ottawa Police Service is exploring all potential motives behind this unprovoked attack and will provide updates as they become available. They encourage anyone with information related to the case to contact the West Criminal Investigations Unit or submit anonymous tips to Crime Stoppers.
