Family speaks out after man fatally shot by off-duty Philly detective

The family of a Northeast Philadelphia man killed by an off duty homicide detective Thursday night believes he may have been trying to offer assistance to what he thought was a stranded motorist. FOX 29's Jeff Cole spoke to the family who is demanding answers.

The Brief

Robert Jones, 54, was fatally shot by an off-duty detective in Northeast Philadelphia in October 2024.

Almost a year later, his family is suing the shooting detective, other officers and the City of Philadelphia.

The lawsuit alleges that Sweeney was not justified in using deadly force against Jones.
