Despite Pleas from Children and Victims’ Relatives, Inmate Dies by Lethal Injection

Curtis Windom, a 59-year-old death row inmate, was executed by lethal injection Thursday at Florida State Prison, becoming the 11th person put to death in the state this year. The execution, which marks a modern-era record for Florida, proceeded despite public pleas from Windom’s own children and relatives of at least one of his victims, who had forgiven him and asked the state to spare his life.

Windom was pronounced dead at 6:17 p.m. EDT. His execution is the 30th in the U.S. this year, driven largely by Florida’s accelerating pace.
