Weather forecasters are urging Michigan beachgoers to stay out of the water, predicting high waves and rip currents in Lake Michigan and Lake Huron through Friday morning.
The National Weather Service issued Beach Hazards Statements on Thursday afternoon for Mason, Oceana, Muskegon, Ottawa, Allegan and Van Buren counties on the western coast of the Lower Peninsula, and for Huron, Sanilac and St. Clair counties in the Thumb.
People are advised to stay out of the water.
Waves are generally expected to measure between 5-7 feet, the NWS warned, with some as high as 9 feet. "Strong currents can pull swimmers into deeper water and high waves can sweep people off piers," the statements read.
