MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — With the conversation of school safety front and center after the Minneapolis mass shooting , Middletown police on Thursday highlighted their efforts to keep students and staff safe.

According to the Associated Press , the shooting happened at the Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis Wednesday. Authorities identified the shooter as Robin Westman, 23, who reportedly shot 116 rifle rounds through the windows of the church while students were celebrating Mass during their first week of school.

Two children were killed and 18 people were hurt, including 15 children.

Westman, who was armed with a rifle, shotgun and pistol, died by suicide, the Associated Press reported, citing local authorities.
