PHOENIX — A 16-year-old police suspect fatally stabbed another teen at Maryvale High School last week has been formally charged, authorities announced Thursday.
A Maricopa County grand jury indicted Chris Aguilar on one count of first-degree murder on Tuesday, according to court documents.
Aguilar is accused of attacking 16-year-old Michael Montoya II first with his fists, then with a pocketknife that police later recovered outside. Montoya was taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries.
Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell has said Aguilar will likely be prosecuted as an adult under the state law on violent crimes with defendants aged 15-17.
The assault took place inside one of the classrooms at the high school, which is near 59th Avenue and Osborn Road, around 10:54 a.m
