As the city of Santa Fe awaits an architectural report on the remains of the Plaza obelisk, the Historic Districts Review Board could weigh in on the historic status of the nearly 160-year-old monument.
Board member Mary Ellen Degnan has requested a discussion on the Soldiers' Monument — the 33-foot-tall obelisk that stood at the center of the downtown Plaza for more than 150 years before it was toppled by protesters in 2020.
“I don’t know if everyone realizes this, but there is no individual designation for this monument," Degnan said, adding she believes conversations about the contentious monument's future would be better informed if the historic board had a chance to consider it.
