ALLEGAN COUNTY, Mich. — As the weekend creeps closer, commuters taking US 131 in Allegan County can look forward to what will hopefully be the end of a frustrating detour that has snarled traffic for days.
After a truck traveling down southbound US-131 struck the top of the overpass due to equipment on top being too high on Tuesday, the bridge was left severely damaged.
While crews worked to repair the bridge, traffic was detoured off the highway.
"It doesn't help when you have to shut down part of the expressway because somebody drives into an overpass," said driver Rod Slentz on Thursday.
Slentz lives in Byron Center and works on the other side of 131. He said he's noticed long lines of cars on both Division and Clyde Park due to the detour.
