EAGAN, Minn. — Making his first collegiate start, Minnesota Duluth tight end Luke Dehnicke turned in a performance to remember in Thursday’s season opener.
The Andover native emerged as the go-to target for quarterback Kyle Walljasper, hauling in six passes for 152 yards and a breakaway 64-yard touchdown in a 35-7 win over Winona State under the bright lights at TCO Stadium.
The win moves the Bulldogs to 7-0 in season openers dating back to 2018.
Walljasper took to the air early and often on the team’s opening possession, connecting with four different passcatchers in Ben Fritsch, Nick Ojile, Chuck Gilbert III, and Joey Flaherty to cross midfield. Redshirt sophomore running back Alex Riley capped off the seven-play, 60-yard drive with a 20-yard burst to the end zone.
