PISCATAWAY – Greg Schiano said it during training camp , and then he said it again earlier this week in the middle of Rutgers football’s preparation for Ohio.

The Scarlet Knights ’ defense is, in his words, "a work in progress."

And that was evident during Rutgers’ 34-31 win over the Bobcats Thursday night at SHI Stadium.

“I've told you guys all along, I haven't tried to hide it,” Schiano said. “It's a work in progress, and it will be all year long. We'll get better and better.”

That’s a necessity.

Because as well as the Scarlet Knights played offensively, with Athan Kaliakmanis going 18-of-23 passing for 252 yards with two touchdowns and Antwan Raymond running for 88 yards and one score, the defense came awfully close to blowing all of it.
