The Baltimore Police Department has launched a new Entertainment District Unit (EDU) aimed at increasing safety and improving quality of life in the city’s busiest nightlife hubs.

According to authorities, the unit, which began operations on August 10, focuses on high-visibility patrols, traffic enforcement and community engagement in areas such as the Inner Harbor, Federal Hill, Harbor Point and Fells Point.

Officials tell WBAL NewsRadio that plans are underway to expand coverage to Canton Square, as well as Camden Yards, M&T Bank Stadium and the city’s casino district.

Police Commissioner Richard Worley said the unit is about more than just enforcement.
