Scientists expect Covid cases to pick up in the coming weeks as a result of seasonal factors such as colder weather, following months where levels have been relatively low.
Some experts believe we are already starting another Covid wave with hospitalisations on the rise. Some 819 patients were admitted to hospital up to in the last week of July, latest figures published on Thursday showed – there were 2,997 on 1 August last year.
There were 41 deaths in the week to 15 August, a slight fall on the previous week and down from 173 registered deaths last year.
