A 300-acre shellfishing area in Bourne was closed yesterday because of pollution after raw sewage was dumped into Buzzards Bay from Bay State, a Massachusetts Maritime Academy training vessel.
Sewage has been dumped into the bay since Bay State returned to port on July 25 after a complete power failure six miles into a training cruise.
When an Academy vessel pulls into port, it is usually used as a laboratory, not as living quarters. About 150 cadets currently live on board the ship.
Depending on the length of the Bay State's stay in port, the Department of Environmental Quality Engineering may rule that the vessel may not be used for living quarters while in port, said Burke R. Limeburner, Bourne Natural Resources Department supervisor.
