A news report from NBC caught our eye last week. Moon jellyfish, which are largely known for not stinging people, have apparently been doing just that in recent years, right here. And the weird part is, this area of the Upper Cape appears to be the only place where the jellies sting. Weirder still, the jellies seem to be stinging people without even making contact.

Nicole Corbett was in Popponesset Bay gathering jellyfish samples for the Barnstable Clean Water Coalition for genetic testing, the report says. Corbett also leads the Popponesset Water Stewardship Alliance , and their research is “trying to get to the bottom of, why does this moon jelly sting in this area of Cape Cod, but we are not getting reports of stinging moon jellies elsewhere.”
