NORMAN — John Mateer stood on Owen Field and launched the football under the stadium lights. The scouts in attendance report that Mateer has quite the arm.
“He threw it really far,” said Justin Montgomery. “He has one heck of an arm on him.”
Of course, Montgomery is not exactly Gil Brandt and has no plans to be, far as I know. Montgomery is a freshman health and exercise science major from Norman. Mateer’s pass wasn’t zipped across the gridiron to meet the hands of a crimson-clad receiver. And while the crowd roared, the crowd consisted of two stadium sections of OU freshmen.
This was freshmen orientation last Sunday, an evening pep rally highlighted by exhortations from Mateer, the campus’ new quarterback, who was as fired up as the civilians
