Authorities have confirmed the arrests of two individuals connected to the search for Dezi Freeman, the alleged gunman from Porepunkah. A 42-year-old woman and her 15-year-old son were taken into custody during a police raid at their home on Thursday night. They were later interviewed and released.

The woman has been identified as Mali Freeman, the wife of the suspect. Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Mike Bush addressed the media on Friday, stating that the pair were the suspected gunman's family members. However, he did not provide specific details regarding the reasons for their arrests. "People were interviewed totally and specifically in relation to the homicide investigation," Bush said. "There may or may not be charges that follow."

The search for Dezi Freeman, 56, has entered its fourth day. He is wanted for allegedly fatally shooting police officers Neal Thompson and Vadim de Waart, and injuring a third officer during a police operation at his property on Tuesday. The incident occurred while officers were executing a search warrant related to historical sex offenses. The injured officer has undergone surgery and is currently recovering.

More than 450 officers are involved in the ongoing investigation and search operation, which has expanded to the alpine region of north-east Victoria. Although the town of Porepunkah is no longer under lockdown, authorities have advised residents to remain vigilant. Initially, police believed Freeman was hiding in the bushland near the shooting site. However, a warning about a "dangerous person" was issued on the VicEmergency website, extending the search area to Nagambie, located 200 kilometers west of Porepunkah.

Commissioner Bush explained that the search area was determined based on police intelligence and has been broadened as a precaution. "Our people have every resource that they require for this horrific homicide," he stated. "I can assure the public that there is a very professional and coordinated operation in place here to bring this to a safe conclusion."

Bush also mentioned that there have been "alleged sightings" of Freeman, which police are currently investigating. He urged the public to report any potential sightings, stating, "We can't confirm that they are of him, but if you think you see him, let us know, we'll explore it."

Authorities believe Freeman may still be armed and have emphasized the importance of community vigilance. As of now, there are no links to terrorism in this case, but Commissioner Bush indicated that all avenues and potential charges will be explored once Freeman is apprehended.
