HMRC has set out the regulations around tax codes as some people may need to give them a call. The update came in response to an enquiry from a taxpayer. They were confused as there was a discrepancy between the tax code on their payslip, which was BR, and the one displayed "on your system", listed as 1112LX.

The person queried the authority about the reason for the two differing codes. HMRC offered a possible explanation, stating: "It looks like your employer hasn't received the code we've sent."

If you find yourself on the 'BR' tax code, it's worth checking if this is correct, as being on this code means all of your income is being taxed at the basic rate of 20 percent.
