U.S. companies are experiencing an unprecedented wave of departing chief executives, reflecting a volatile business environment and related pressures on corporate leadership.

According to a new report from Challenger, Gray & Christmas, CEO changes at American companies totaled 123 last month. While that marks a 41 percent drop from the 207 recorded in June, this has pushed the total number of departures in 2025 to 1,358, the highest level since Challenger began tracking these in 2002.

"CEO turnover continues to climb in 2025, reflecting the immense pressures leaders face in navigating economic uncertainty, rapid technological change, and shifting organizational priorities," wrote Andy Challenger, the outplacement firm's workplace and labor expert.
