MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Memphis Inner City Rugby is breaking ground Friday on a new state-of-the-art rugby facility at the former Vance Middle School in South Memphis, funded by a $1.1 million grant from Shelby County Government.
The groundbreaking marks the transformation of a blighted field, providing a home field for Memphis Inner City Rugby. The nonprofit was organization was founded by teachers in 2012 to offer students a physical outlet and foster social development.
"We are turning one of the most blighted spots in our community into something kids and families can use and enjoy," said Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris. "I am grateful for the Board of Commissioners' support on this project."
The project is a collaboration between Memphis Inner City Rugby and Memphis Shelby County Schools.
