HOUSTON – With Labor Day weekend marking the unofficial end of summer, Houston-area law enforcement agencies are teaming up once again to keep impaired drivers off the roads.
A multi-agency “No Refusal” initiative began Friday and will run through Monday night, targeting drunk drivers during one of the deadliest holiday weekends of the year.
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) reports that a crash involving an impaired driver occurs every 23 minutes in the state. Last Labor Day weekend, 10 people were killed and 36 others were seriously injured in DWI-related crashes.
Officials say the Gulf Freeway remains a particular concern, with more drunk driving deaths there than on any other freeway in Houston.
