GARNER, Iowa — The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is investigating a copper spill at the Zinpro facility near Garner.

A broken pipe on Thursday morning led to the release of around 700 gallons of copper-containing liquid. The liquid flowed into an on-site storm drain and then into a drainage ditch west of the facility.

Cleanup is ongoing, and a dam has been constructed one mile downstream to contain the spill. Dead fish have been reported in Drainage Ditch 81, and the water has turned blue.

Residents are urged to avoid contact with water in the affected area. For after-hours spill reports, contact the DNR's 24-hour spill line at 515-725-8694.

Prompt reporting can aid in stopping a fish kill. More information is available on the DNR website .
