(WKYT) - In the lead-up to America turning 250 years old, we are looking back at every day in ‘This Day In History.’

On this date in 1885, boxing’s first official heavyweight title fight under modern rules took place.

John L. Sullivan, also known as “the Boston Strong Boy,” defeated Dominick McCaffrey at Chester Park in Cincinnati to become America’s first heavyweight hero.

This was the first championship fought with gloves.

Sullivan was declared the winner after six three-minute rounds.
