People have been told to be vigilant over yellow-legged Asian hornets
A warning has been issued following the worst year on record for sightings of yellow-legged Asian hornets. The British Beekeepers Association (BBKA) has highlighted that these non-native predators can decimate honey bee colonies and wreak havoc on native insect populations.
This year, the number of yellow-legged hornets has skyrocketed, with more nest discoveries and sightings than all previous years combined. Southern areas such as Kent and East Sussex typically bear the brunt in the UK.
However, sightings have been reported as far north as Runcorn, with a single hornet spotted earlier this month. In response to this surge, the Chair of the BBKA has urged the public to stay vigilant and report any sightings
