Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the president of Portugal, surprised Portuguese citizens in more ways than one this week when he attended a PSD (Portugal Socialist Party) Summer University event.

The president, who was scheduled to speak at the event via video call, instead appeared at the event in person to give an address for a panel titled “The President’s Responses,” according to the Portugal Pulse .

De Sousa used the speaking engagement as an opportunity to comment on President Donald Trump and his relationship with Russia.

“The top leader of the world’s foremost superpower is, objectively, a Soviet or Russian asset,” de Sousa said, according to the Portugal Pulse’s report. “He operates as an asset.”
