The town of Mount Airy will honor the memory of a young boy.

The memorial is for 13-year-old Mason Kearns, who died last month after being swept into a drainage pipe during flash flooding.

Lt. Gov. Aruna Miller will join the city’s mayor and Kearns’ family to walk the site of the incident and address concerns over pipes that may need grates to prevent similar incidents.

Mount Airy Mayor Larry Hushour went before the Town Council to address concerns about the pipes.

“He was happy, he was always laughing, he was way full of energy. It’s just such an empty hole now in the world,” said Kearns’ grandmother, Bonnie Errico. “I want them to remember he was a good kid who could’ve made a lot of good in the world, and he’s gone way too soon.”
